In the year 2000, the national Highway traffic safety administration of the US Department of Transportation counted 41,821 fatalities, 5.3 million injuries and 28 million damaged vehicles. (New York State's share in 2000 was about 1,500 fatalities, injuries were up to 292,000.) They put the economic cost of highway crashes at 231 billion; lost market productivity and 61 billion; medical expenses and 33 billion and travel delay of 25 billion. Alcohol involved crashes accounted for 51 billion or 22% of the total; speeding cost 40 billion; not using the seatbelt cost 22% of the fatalities were 9200 lives in 143,000 serious injuries. Using the seatbelt prevented 11,900 fatalities and 325,000 serious injuries.

And, from Money Magazine, 5/03, p.89:
"crashes remain the leading cause of death for Americans, ages one to 34."

Effectiveness of the New York State safety program

The last effectiveness study of the program indicates that it results in 35% reduction in traffic accidents and 65% reduction in traffic violations.

Reduce up to four points on your driving record

If you incurred violations during the 18 month period prior to completing the course, up to four points will be reduced on your driving record, possibly helping you to avoid a license suspension. However, it will not cancel mandatory suspension or revoking, in example 3 speeding convictions within 18 months nor will it cancel any action pending against a motorist driving privileges. You may take the NYSP course every 18 months for point reduction.

Save 10% for three years on your auto insurance

After completing the point/insurance reduction program, you are eligible for 10% discount on your collision and auto liability insurance for three full years. Your liability premium includes property damage, bodily injury, and personal injury protection.  Your discount will apply to all vehicles for which you are the principal operator. Think about that. Who is eligible?

All principle vehicle operators are eligible including:

  • All drivers, regardless of violation in accident report.
  • Youthful drivers, in addition to discount for driver education training
